Production of PET radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals

The University Institute for Positron Emission Tomography is the only production capacity in the country for the production of PET radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals. The radiopharmaceuticals required for PET/CT scanning are manufactured in the Department for Radioisotope and Radiopharmaceutical Production, whose infrastructure is designed and constructed in accordance with the principles of good manufacturing practice (GMP) and in accordance with European regulations for the production of PET radiopharmaceuticals.

The institute is equipped with a 16.5 MeV GE PETtrace 860 cyclotron for the production of PET radioisotopes, and includes three laboratories for the production of radiopharmaceuticals, two quality control laboratories and a research laboratory.

The first radioisotope productions were conducted in December 2015, and in June 2017, routine production of radiopharmaceuticals for clinical use began.

The production of [ 18 F]FDG and [ 18 F]NaF radiopharmaceuticals is carried out routinely, following the strategy of enriching the assortment with other radiopharmaceuticals that can be successfully implemented within the framework of clinical nuclear medicine practice.
